History The Domes Jarabacoa

In 2001, my father, Mr. Miguel González, began a close relationship with Mr. Manuel de los Santos and his family in Jarabacoa, La Vega. At that time, they decided to purchase a piece of land with views of the town of Jarabacoa. There was no road access to the property, so a group of landowners came together to build a trail and install electricity.

Later on, my father hired an architect and developed the structural plan for the family home he intended to build in Jarabacoa. He proceeded to begin earthworks to start the construction.

During that process, Mr. De los Santos sadly passed away, and due to the sorrow of losing his friend, the land was left abandoned for the next 19 years.

As the González Pla family, we decided to begin exploring our country in 2018. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, like many Dominican families, we looked for ways to escape the cities, enjoy more contact with nature, go hiking, and participate in domestic tourism. My family was no exception, and so we began searching for safe and beautiful camping spots.

During that search, the idea came to me to create our own campsite using my father's land. However, it posed several challenges—there was no water, no bathrooms, and no electricity. That’s when I decided to adapt the area where the project's social space is now located, to have it ready by Easter 2021.

Engineer Gabriel de los Santos (Don Manuel’s nephew) handled the land preparations, building a water cistern, two bathrooms with gas water heaters, planting grass, and setting up a perimeter fence. He also secured the energy supply contract with the power company.

After many camping trips, I discovered that while there are many places in the Dominican Republic that I enjoy, few offer the peace and serenity that this hillside provides. Due to my wife's constant insistence on not staying in a tent, we began to explore construction alternatives. In fact, she is part of the inspiration behind the project The Domes Jarabacoa.

We looked into tipi-style houses, bungalows, prefab cabins, wooden structures, and brick constructions. After extensive research, exploring and watching hundreds of YouTube videos to analyze outdoor trends and assess costs, we realized that geodesic domes were a viable option that allowed us to offer both luxury and comfort. I also wanted a structure that would preserve the essence of the location, keep the connection with nature, and most importantly, have minimal environmental impact.

After a year of planning, securing municipal and environmental permits, we began construction in June 2022.

You’ll be able to enjoy this peaceful place and connect with nature starting December 2022.
